ESNZ Leads the Way with SafetyPUBLISHED 14 JULY 2016

Rider safety (and safety in general) is always a critical concern for ESNZ and its Board has taken a bold step in mandating the use of approved safety helmets for ALL equestrian competition in the future.  This means that the long-established top hat is no longerallowed to be worn in the disciplines of Dressage and Eventing with immediate effect.

Following the withdrawal of safety standard EN1384 (BSEN1384) in Europe during 2014-2015 ESNZ has reviewed all its helmet safety requirements.

Accordingly, and with immediate effect, the new European standard VG1 is approved and any helmet bearing only EN1384 will no longer be approved from 31 July 2017.  This will give riders time to purchase new helmets if necessary, and is aligned with the New Zealand Pony Club Associations time frame for meeting the same standards.  The other approved standards which some equestrian sports use remain unchanged.

“This is a major step forward for safety of riders competing in New Zealand and is accompanied by the ESNZ recommendation that helmets should be worn at all time when handling horses” said ESNZ CEO Vicki Glynn.  “Horses can be unpredictable and we know that riding is a risk sport so we must do everything we can to make our equestrians safe” she says. “Sadly we can no longer allow the use of the top hat in competition but the design and elegance of the contemporary safety helmet makes them a worthy replacement and safety must come first.”

As per the ESNZ General Regulations, Article 150: Protective Headgear, the following will apply:

  • ESNZ recommends helmets should be worn at all times when dealing with horses.
  • While riding at the showgrounds/competition venue the use of properly fastened protective headgear is mandatory.
  • All riders must wear protective headgear that conforms with one of the current approved safety standards. These standards may be subject to change but the latest list can be found on the ESNZ website athttp://www.nzequestrian.org.nz/esnz/resources/health-safety.   ESNZ will ensure that changes to the standards are communicated to members and area committees.
  • Riders will not be permitted to compete unless they wear approved protective headgear.
  • Any rider who fails to wear protective headgear when required will be issued with an official warning. If that rider fails to comply for a second time at any Event, a protest will be lodged with the Ground Jury. If the protest is upheld, the rider will be disqualified from further participation in the Event, unless exceptional circumstances apply.
  • The use of cameras by riders while riding at a showground/competition venue (however such a camera is affixed, whether to the rider, protective headgear, head covering, or carriage) is prohibited, unless otherwise specifically agreed to by the ESNZ Technical Delegate officiating at the Event (in consultation with the President of the GJ, where appropriate). Such a decision will be completely at the discretion of the Technical Delegate/GJ President, and not subject to challenge. In the event that approval is given by the Technical Delegate/GJ President, an athlete’s decision to wear a camera while competing will always be voluntary and at the athlete’s own risk.

Approved protective headgear Safety Standards:

  • AS/NZS 3838 (current Australia and New Zealand Standard) (1998, 2003 or 2006)
  • VG1 (interim European Standard)
  • ASTM-F11632004awiththe SEImark (current US Standard)
  • PAS 015:1998 or 2011 with BSI Kitemark
  • Snell E2001with theofficial Snell labeland number
  • EN 1384 and BSEN 1384 (current outgoing European Standard) until 31 July 2017 only – not permitted from 1 August 2017)

We are so lucky in the "Deep South" to have a wonderful sponsor in Saddlery Warehouse Dunedin (thank you Sandra) and Invercargill (thanks to you too Rachel) who support our Otago Southland CN-C2 Challenge. It is fantastic to see riders travelling between Otago and Southland to support this series each season and we truly appreciate the incentive this series gives our riders to travel and give our two regions a wonderful series which continues to foster the close friendships we have built over many many years of friendly rivalry.

And from Allie re SI Dates:

Hi SI Rider's
You may or may not be aware that the hosting of the SI Champs came up at the SI riders meeting in Jan 2016, re another area hosting it in 2017. Canterbury Feel it's another Area's turn to hold the "South Island's - Festival of Dressage" Championship Show - Marlborough declined this time round to host the SI so Southland has taken up the offer.
Southland has booked dates: 10th - 11th & 12th of Feb 2017.  (Friday-Sunday) Gore A&P Show Grounds - This is the weekend after Nationals in Fielding
Working out dates is always a nightmare for each Area! as there is such a clash of dates all over NZ & Other Code's using Grounds! (They have looked at March after HOY, but that's getting to late, re daylight hours to run something of that scale)
"Southland Dressage" has to work in with the Gore A&P, their hard working core committee & consideration of the weather been better in Feb (Even tho they will have most of their Arena's on the All weather Surface the Musicals will be run on Grass, the footing is fantastic in the oval, been sand based with Grass top esp designed sports field.. So their might be another couple of Arena's in their as well, depends on entries
Please feel free to forward to Riders etc in your area, and any Questions or problems please email me back - Just want you all to be aware of the Date change & Area
Cheers,
Allie Harper

2014 SI JUDGES CLINIC

Thanks Wendy Butler for supplying us with this report

South Island Dressage Judges Clinic August 2014 - Otago

In August Dressage Otago hosted the Official South Island Judges Clinic conducted by Sue Hobson, Helen Hughes-Keen and Jan Bird on behalf of Dressage NZ. There were approximately 70 attendees from throughout the South Island and one Judge who travelled all the way from Auckland to attend and was kindly hosted by one of Dressage Otago’s Committee members. The clinic was open to all Judges, riders and any interested persons.

On arrival and sign in all attendees were offered tea/coffee and a delicious scone then we went through to the indoor arena and got comfortable around the arena. After welcoming everyone Sue and Jan spoke about recent rule changes and the new criteria for upgrading and judging and then we looked at paces of the training/level 1-2 horses moving on through the day to access certain movements and the way of going including sequence changes, piaffe and passage. Over a scrumptious lunch everyone had a chance to catch up with friends and acquaintances before heading back to the arena for the afternoon session.

A huge thanks must go to all the demonstration riders without whom this day would not have been possible, all riders did a fantastic job and were all very obliging and as the presenters commented “a pleasure to work with”, they were Training/Level1-2 Rebecca Clarke, Chi Sutherland and Cate Edgeler, Level 3-5 Belinda Horne, Hielke De Graaf and Jackie Thomas and Level 6-8 Wendy Butler and Barbara Chalmers. Also a big thank you to Barbara Chalmers (Otago Judges Officer) who did a wonderful job of organising and coordinating the clinic making sure that everything ran smoothly on the day. I’m sure that all attendees will have gone home well prepared for the new season ahead.

Registration

Please check the attached link for the new requirements for membership and horse registration.  Please note that if competing in the Ungraded classes the rider MUST be a Community Member.  This is effective for all our tournaments this year, so it is important that you attend to this as soon as possible

Grading System - Proposed Review

At Conference, a remit was put forward by Dressage Waikato (and failed) regarding the grading system.  The Conference Minutes record of this and the discussion is as follows:

From Dressage Waikato (D Cowen /  M Paterson)  Remit: Amendment to Rule 460:  Review the grading points awarded for % gained
  Proposed  points structure:    57-59.99  = 1pt

                                                   60-62.99  = 2pts

Thereafter 1pt extra for every 2% rise in score

Debra Cowen spoke to the above remit about adding extra points for higher scores.
FAILED
The Chairman said that the rationale has a valid point but the remit as worded needs to be improved. Suggested that the whole matter of grading points go forward to the Board to be reviewed.  However, she added that to raise the points awarded at upper levels would need to be looked at with caution, as it could affect the whole overall grading system.
The SM advised that grading points need to be looked at together the whole system.  Administratively this remit would have an impact on people with on-line scoring programmes, and the staff to manually input these points to the data base.
The Chairman suggested that the first part of the remit and the rationale be adopted and leave it to the board to review the grading points system.  This would also provide time for it to be put out to the riders.  This would mean that it will be reworded and brought forward again.
It was agreed: That a review of the current Grading Points system be left to the  Board to consider.

The Board is now undertaking this review.  If you have any comments about the above proposal, if you prefer the current system, or have any other ideas please contact our SI Riders Rep, Allie Harper - [email protected] or phone Allie(her contact details are available on the ESNZ page)

2014 Conference - Rules

Conference News

POSITIVE MOOD PREVAILS AT DRESSAGE CONFERENCE

Canterbury Dressage hosted a hugely successful Conference and Awards Dinner at the end of June.  The theme  "Focus on the Future” initiated at the April Forum continued with agreement to review  number of key areas of sport administration and governance.

The Main review points include:

ESNZ By-Law 17 Rules for Dressage Administration.

Board and Area Delegate tenure/ rotation policy.  Although the remits from Bay of Plenty and Canterbury on this topic failed, it was because of the detail in the remits rather than the intent. Therefore it was agreed to consider the intent and provide a suitable framework / rules around the intent. It was noted that any changes to the By-Law   for Administration would need to be passed at a Special AGM  for implementation for the new season 2015/16.

Board and Area Delegate tenure/ rotation policy.  In principle there was support to consider maximum tenure for Board positions but that consideration needed to be given to the election/appointment process alongside this review. That the tenure for Area Delegates on the committee also be considered

Board and Committee Structure and Powers of each: That the review consider the appropriate delegation of decision making to each of these bodies, and at the same time review the structure and composition of each.

AGA /Committee Meeting Format: That the review consider the format of the AGA alongside recommendations for any new structure

Procedures for submitting remits. In principle it was agreed that all remits  should be submitted to the April Planning Forum to give more time for robust consultation with members and area groups. Suggested that no new remits be submitted to conference as too often insufficient research and background is made available and therefore remits with worthy intent that warrant passing in part,  or in a different format,  are failed because of time frames or other procedures that require prior implementation .

That a further Strategic Planning Meeting is to be held as soon as possible to progress the plan around the agreed priorities and consider who is responsible for which area :

 SIX KEY STRATEGIES

       Officials & Volunteers

       Marketing & Communication

       Sustainability

       Rider Participation & Sport Development

       Sportsmanship & Clean Sport

       Achievement & Success

Who is Responsible for Implementation  ?

       Board

       Committee

       Area Groups

       Riders

       Officials

       Volunteers

Next Steps

       Prioritise the agreed outcomes

       Delegate the actions required

Agree the time frames for implementation

       Tools required to measure success

       Reporting

 Work in Progress Examples

Roadshow and the accompanying information and documentation presented

       Judges Training Manual Update

 RULES

ESNZ General Regs & Dressage Rules

The ESNZ General Regs review has required a number of discipline specific articles to be transferred to the Dressage Rules

Horse Grading Points System

Agreed to review the grading points system and consider if a scale of grading points be introduced for scores above 67%. This review needs to be considered alongside the current points required and system for upgrading, the benefits of introducing  a scale of points as described and the administration of the grading system via on-line providers, area groups and ESNZ.

Inter II 2014

Good evening all

A last minute decision by the FEI has in fact seen the re-introduction of the FEI Intermediate II v2014 as attached, despite previous advice that the INt II was being withdrawn as from 1 Jan 2014

It is recommended that if possible, any OC who has scheduled the FEI Int II as a national class in 2014 use this new version.

As there will not be large numbers in the classes, it should be possible for you to notify riders of this change.

Please note there is a change to the pattern in this test so riders do need to be aware of this.

Thank you for your assistance re this matter which was out of our control and has also caused issues for other NF’s

Regards

FEI WDC Selections

McLeans Island to host Pryde’s Easifeeds  NZL section of the FEI World Dressage Challenge on 19/20 November (please add pryde’s logo & FEI logo)
Get along and support your NZL  team which will be announced following the team selection trial and Horse Inspection (approx 4.30pm) on Tuesday  19 November at the Whitehaven Wines  International Welcome Party & Draw in the event marquee.  Supporters can purchase additional limited  tickets for this function up until  noon at the event at $20 pp.
Dressage NZ also wishes to thank Soo & Mike Wells from Farloe SportHorses who are supporting presentation rugs for the Best Presented Junior & Senior Combinations. These  awards  are  decided by the International Judges at the Horse Inspection
The Dunedin based Southern Trust has also pledged support for this event
NZL is the final team to compete in the 2013 FEI Zone 9 Challenge Competition and so the excitement will build during the day on Wednesday 20th as team and individual riders endeavour to better the scores posted from the other countries in or Zone and take the 2013 team title yet again.
The FEI World Dressage Challenge is highly regarded by NZL riders as the opportunity to be assessed by international judges and if you are in the top placings,  a lesson as well. In addition to these benefits there is the chance to compete against riders from  Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong  and the Philiipines. These countries are continuing to develop and have challenged for the lead in all sections over the past couple of years. NZL had the narrowest of wins in the Team competition in 2012 and selectors have narrowed the original 76 nominations down to 40 starters, plus have the luxury of a strong reserve list should there be any defections
The reserves are named in order regardless of which section they are in and so numbers in each NZL section could change by the time of the November competition

Adelinde Cornelissen  at Equidays in October

Organisers of Equidays®, New Zealand’s world class equine event, are delighted to announce details of the first confirmed clinician for Equidays 2013.

Dutch dressage rider and London 2012 Olympic silver medallist Adelinde Cornelissen is currently ranked number one in the FEI World Dressage Rankings; the Equidays team are thrilled that she will be appearing at Equidays in October.

The world renowned dressage rider will join a range of diverse national and international clinicians headlining New

Zealand’s popular equine event; Equidays. Held 18 to 20 October at Mystery Creek Events Centre, enthusiasts

throughout the country have been eager to know who to expect at the third annual Equidays.

Adelinde won team and individual gold medals at the 2011 European Championships, back to back wins in the FEI World Cup Finals in 2011/2012 and was ranked number one in the world when she made her Olympic debut at the London 2012 Games, where she took individual silver and team bronze. Now, Adelinde and horse Jerich Parzival, have reclaimed the world number one spot in the FEI World Dressage Ranking with a 97-point lead over their nearest rivals.

Adelinde will bring a wealth of dressage techniques to Equidays 2013 where she will conduct Master Classes on both the Saturday and Sunday mornings during Equidays plus feature in the Friday night show. Tickets to these extra special events will be released, along with the general Equidays tickets, at Fieldays.

This year Equidays is focused on the core disciplines: Dressage, Show Jumping, Show Hunter, and Eventing along with a lot of other exciting aspects that are new for 2013 and will be released over the next few weeks.

Organisers are working hard to ensure Equidays features a good balance of disciplines and has a healthy line up of clinicians, activities and demonstrations. The Equidays team are pleased to begin confirming the line-up, “We have been in discussion with a number of international clinicians over many months, and are delighted to finally be in a position to start announcing who is coming to Equidays” explains Lynley Schollum, Equiday’s Event Executive.

Hannah's 2013

Otago Young Rider Hannah Johnston has had the sort of year we all dream about with her horses, Just Hollie, and Brampton Gigolo.  Hannah has written us a report of her adventures with her horses this season, including her trips to the North island (and yes, the "s" was meant to be included in "trips").  As well as congratulating Hannah on a season to be proud of, I would also like to congratulate her parent, Eric and Moyra for the support they have shown her.  Moyra in particular must dream of driving the truck!  Well done to you all.

South Island Young Riders Camp

Dressage New Zealand were unable to run any young rider camps in the South Island this year.
So a group of Young Riders and their Supporters have organised a Training camp for all South Island Dressage Young Riders to be held at McLean's Island 12-13 October 2012.
I have attached a flyer that I would appreciate you distributing around your Areas Young Riders. We have had a very good response so far but want to make sure we don't miss anyone.
The camp will have to be user pays but we are trying to keep the costs as low as possible.

Life in the little village of Arget is plodding along quietly. Our first competition was at the Munich-Reim CDI mid May. It wasn't the best experience of my competition career, but there was lots to be learnt from it. In hindsight, it was probably the wrong competition to do first up in Germany. The atmosphere was difficult, with access to the arena through a path in the trees with carriage horses on one side and race horses on the other. I was very grateful (trainer) Andreas was there to help with leading me there and back. The warm-up arena was beside the carriage horses, below the path through the trees, where horses in their various coloured covers were walking. It was full of about 15 fantastic horses and riders. All in all, it was a little difficult and intimidating.

AJ was not bad in the test but it just didn't happen. I was probably a little overawed by everything and didn't ride him positively enough, and we made a lot of silly mistakes. I stayed on for the two days after the test to keep training in that atmosphere and to watch the top riders and horses. There were so many! Probably about 70 grand prix horses between the 3*, 5* and under 25s, and not a bad one in sight.

My favourite was Valentina Truppa's 5* horse from Italy. It was so electric and exciting to watch, and such beautiful riding. Watching Edward Gal and Hans Peter was also fantastic. It certainly is a different world over here.

AJ is still determined it's winter time and has a thick coat but due to him being so fine skinned, I can't risk clipping him so I'm hoping for a season change in his coat. I don't blame him being confused though – we left for the show in snow and came back 3 days later in 30 degrees.

I was planning on another CDI at Achleiten in Austria this week but unfortunately AJ fell over on the concrete the other day. He got a fright when the dogs rushed out behind him – I honestly think there are more dogs than horses here sometimes and there are about 50 horses, so you can imagine how many dogs there are! He is OK, but a little sore so with that and a slight cough, I've had to withdraw and give him a week of walking. It’s disappointing, as apparently it's a fantastic show and I felt I needed to get out there again after Munich and work on my confidence.

I will instead do a big local show at the end of June and hopefully we'll be fit and well for that. London is getting closer and closer. Less than 60 days to go. I feel like I need more time training as I can't change the fact that AJ is still green at this level, and putting a grand prix test together is not easy. On the flip side of that, it will be such a great experience and I'm looking forward to getting to England where I can understand everyone – or most anyway! My mother comes over next week. It will be good to have a bit more company and support from New Zealand.

Andrew McLean clinic before SI Champs

Greetings everyone

We have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to experience a clinic with Andrew McLean on the Thursday evening ( 5.00-7.30pm) before the SI Champs. We hope that many riders from outside Christchurch may take advantage of this. The cost will be $30 for the 2.5 hour clinic. He will work with three different horses at different levels of training. The clinic is being arranged by Donald Thomson and Bronnie Scott of Equintessential Saddlery in conjunction with Canterbury Dressage and Eventing Canterbury

Any questions please phone Donald on 342 9221.

“Andrew McLean is currently the most acclaimed and published scientist in the emerging field of Equitation Science, a winner of Australia’s most prestigious award in science, the Eureka Science Prize for his contribution to animal welfare and one of the very few theorists with a strong competitive background in eventing, dressage and show-jumping. Andrew is one of the very few to have ever been invited to present 3 times at the Global Dressage Forum and has successfully coached Grand Prix riders in 5 different countries. From the neuroscience and biomechanical viewpoint Andrew sees himself as an ‘equine engineer’ - his simplified approach to the subject is embedded in animal learning processes and ethology, yet his love of animals shines clearly through this framework. His approach can be disarming to the traditionalist view, yet its success is beyond reproach. Nowadays Andrew specialises in teaching audiences to understand the theory and application of this knowledge, to liberate riders and trainers from the ‘dark ages of equestrianism’ so that they become empowered, confident and knowledgeable and able to see clearly beyond the barriers imposed by tradition.”

TSB Bank Dressage Musical Extravaganza 2012
Dressage NZ is thrilled to announce TSB Bank as naming rights sponsor of the 2012 Dressage Musical Extravaganza, an equestrian event of unparalled entertainment being held in Fielding in March.

Sport manager Wendy Hamerton is delighted with the partnership and feels the bank’s profile will add extra credibility to what is already shaping up to be one of the most exciting events on the Dressage calendar next year.

The annual event is based around the Dressage musical freestyle class – the big finale of the Bates National Dressage Championships 2012 held at Manfeild Park Stadium, Feilding 1-4th March. The country’s Grand Prix competitors are all looking for top performances at this event which is a qualifier for the London Olympics 2012 – dressage have qualified a team for the games for the first time in the history of the sport.

TSB Bank managing director/CEO Kevin Murphy said the bank was delighted to be associated with such a prestigious event.

“We’re proud to be supporting Dressage New Zealand’s Musical Extravaganza – an event which will be both challenging for riders and an enthralling evening’s entertainment for spectators”.

Held on Saturday evening, 3 March at Manfeild Park’s purpose built indoor stadium, the TSB Bank Dressage Musical Extravaganza is an evening competition including equestrian entertainment and live music. Dressage to music has attracted huge crowds in Europe for the last decade and has revolutionised Dressage as a spectator sport. The beauty, power, skill, expression and choreography of dressage to music at this level is breathtaking and will appeal to the equestrian public, musical enthusiasts and keen sports fans of all age groups.

More on National Champs 2013

Canterbury have suggested the following scenarios for Nationals 2013 in the South Island.  It is important we make this the best event we can.  Please read through the suggestions from Canterbury and let Kate have your feedback ([email protected]) or any alternate suggestions you might have.

Greetings everyone

The question of dates for the Nationals 2013 have had considerable debate at our meetings in Canterbury. There are two scenarios which we are looking at presently.

1 That we hold the SI Champs the last weekend in January, a week before the Nationals (both at McLeans Island), as an incentive for NI riders to come to two competitions and make the trip south more worthwhile. If this were to happen, we would like one other SI area to take responsibility for the organisation of the event with some assistance for Canterbury; and

2 Having the Nationals in April, well after HOY.

One of the issues with having NCH in early February is that many NI areas have not had their qualifiers by that time.

Please discuss these ideas with your committees and get a response to me within the next ten days as Wendy wants some indications for the Board meeting on 14 October.

Many thanks

Robin Haberfield

Strangles Advice

Strangles

It has been confirmed that there has been a case of Strangles in the Otago area. However this is only been on one property and is well contained so there should be no reason for any change to our competition plans. It does however serve as a timely reminder that we do need to keep up good hygiene precautions when we are traveling with our horses to minimize the spread of any respiratory disease including strangles.

Strangles is a bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus equi equi. This is a highly contagious bug causing upper respiratory disease. Young horses especially can develop quite severe disease, however the disease is rarely fatal. The bug is spread in nasal discharge and therefore any equipment that gets this discharge on it, including feeding buckets, gear and even from patting horses without washing your hands first. So hygiene is the most important aspect of reducing spread of disease. The incubation period from contact to infection is 3 – 10days. Humans cannot get this disease with the exception of immuno-compromised individuals.

Symptoms include dullness, loss of appetite, high temperature, thick yellow/green discharge from the nose and sometimes eyes, a soft cough and swelling of the glands under the jaw which are also hot and painful. These glands basically form into abscesses and will often rupture, sometimes they need to be lanced by a vet and drained. After the glands burst the horse usually becomes much brighter and starts to return to good health, usually within 20 days. Some animals develop complications after this phase of the disease, including abscesses throughout the body (bastard strangles), a bleeding disorder, infection of the guttural pouches and colic.

Strangles is relatively easy to diagnose, usually based on clinical signs though for confirmation the bacteria can be cultured at the lab if need be. Treatment includes penicillin in the early stages if abscesses have not formed yet and supportive care which your vet can discuss with you.

There are two different vaccinations available, an injectable form and an intranasal form. Protection from these vaccinations is not 100%, like the flu vaccine in humans. However if vaccinated horses do succumb, the infection is less severe, lasts for less time, and they are less likely to develop Bastard Strangles. Immunity after natural infection is much stronger and horses which have had the disease are unlikely to get it again. Shedding of the bacteria following infection is usually less than 8 weeks though there can be the occasional individual where it may be longer.

General rules for keeping competition horses as safe as possible from respiratory diseases when competing are well known to all of you we are sure but will reiterate the basics as a reminder.

  1.  Vaccinate or at least discuss it with your veterinarian.
  2. If your horse shows any signs of being unwell then leave it at home.
  3. Do not use communal water troughs
  4. Do not borrow grooming gear feed bowls or buckets etc.
  5. Do not allow nasal contact/sniffing between horses.
  6. If using stables at venues that are used frequently (especially for traveling horses ie racecourses) consider taking a spray bottle and spraying surfaces with a good viricidal agent EG Virkon.

Obviously it is a little difficult when using yards and boxes at our tournament venues we really have to rely on our horses natural immunity as well as vaccines and other competitors having healthy horses which we all try to do anyway. Remember that many horses cough especially at night and when first worked so do not go into panic when you hear a coughing horse, if you are really concerned talk to the owner there is probably a good explanation. Also remember that a horses natural grazing with head down allows the respiratory system to drain, this is natures way of protecting horses from respiratory disease so feed your horse at ground level especially when boxed or on restricted grazing. It is also recommended that if your horse cannot lower its head when traveling that it be taken out and grazed every 4 hours!!! (need a bombproof horse for this I think)

National Champs 2013

Time already to start thinking about 2013 Nationals at McLeans Island.  It is very important we make this a huge success.

Our delegate needs our opinions regarding dates.  For background, Wendy Hamerton, Dressage Sports Manager has sent the following letter to all delegates:

Dear All

Re 2013 NZ Champs

It is not too soon to be thinking about regional dates for 2012 / 2013 !

The recent committee meeting pased that in 2013, the NCH will be at McLeans Is (date TBC)
& that a CDI and supporting classes will be run on the first weekend in March, at Manfeild. approx ten days prior to the start of the HOYS

So the first thing required is to confirm the date of the Nationals - it has been suggested that it could be run on the traditional SICH weekend - first weekend in Feb which gives riders in both islands a better opportunity to attend both the nationals and the CDI and /or HOYS

To be able to run another big event on the calendar will require more personnel & sponsorship and so I would encourage all areas to be able to offer personnel & asssitance where they can please.

The NI regions will struggle to complete  all Challenge Qualifiers prior to the first weekend in Feb - practically, NI combinations will need to leave on or soon after the last weekend in January to compete at the NCH in early Feb -plus entry closing dates need to be considered
Is it perhaps then the best solution for 2013 to run the SI Challenge Finals at the NCH ? This concept will also need to be discussed with sponsors as it also means an alternate venue for the national challenge finals - perhaps at the CDI ?  but other ideas please ?
NI areas will need to avoid running REG events whatever date NCH are on in SI ?
So needed to be confirmed for 2102/13

Your thoughts asap please

South Island
SI Regional dates
SICH date & venue
NCH date  1-3 Feb ? or  8-10 if grounds available

North Island
NI Regional Dates
NICH Date (Auckland) probably 26-28
CDI will be 1-3 March  HOYS 12- 17 March
